It happened while filming the final season of New Girl, Dermot Mulroney reappeared on the show as “Fancyman Russell,” and wrestles Jake Johnson’s character “Nick,” but things got out of hand during one of the takes of the two actors that left Johnson with a broken hand.
“It was a situation in hindsight, didn’t have to happen,” Mulroney told Welcome to Our Show host Zooey Deschanel. “We got into a zone that was a bit more physical because I approached it that way.”
It’s not uncommon for stunts to go wrong on the set of a TV show or movie, but typically stunt professionals are taking the risk of injury while the actors watch on. In this specific scene, both actors had to do the stunt and Mulroney believes he personally over committed.
“I knew he was injured, and I really regret that moment,” he said. “I have given it a lot of thought and I know how to not let that happen again.”
Deschanel said it was hard to tell if Johnson was actually injured because he brushed off everyone’s concerns. She recalled her costar being a little extra grumpy that day, and reassured Mulroney that the injury was minor.
“Jake and I really parted as friends and I have seen him (several) times since,” said Mulroney.
