one of nature’s biggest battles occurred as a family group of five Killer Whales attacked and killed a Gray Whale calf. This is the first attack of the season. The mom and calf pair of Gray Whales were on their migration north to Alaska as they passed through Monterey Bay and over the dangerous Monterey Submarine Canyon. This area is one of the most dangerous parts of their long migration from Mexico to Alaska as Killer Whales frequent Monterey Bay during the Gray Whales’ spring migration and patrol the canyon edges looking for them. The attack lasted 4 hours as the mother Gray Whale struggled to protect her calf from these powerful predators.
